Interstate compact- coaching and counseling across state lines

What does this mean? This means a law has been passed to allow counselors and clients to potentially stay together even if having to cross state lines. Wisconsin joined the compact at the end of 2023!

The compact is still in the process of being developed- so we have no official start date- legislation is hoping to have set procedures by end of 2024. Each state will have power over how they want the compact “contract” to look, and which states they will allow to “contract” with them.

For example: being in Wisconsin I have clients who move to Michigan or Illinois, or outer states for college. Any of these states can now say they will or will not allow me to apply to be “credentialed” across state lines. An out of state credential would require me to submit my licensure and other materials to prove I have experience and valid professional license to practice and allow me to work with my clients and potentially clients of that state- this is where each state can determine the capacity in which I can work- either strictly can only follow my client or have free range. Some states have a great need for therapists, and others are over saturated with many providers.
