What is Social Media to me?

Prompt: How do you use social media?

I use social media as a way to share what I do with others. Not only what, but why as I feel that is important to know to some extent. Transparency and being genuine are an important part of my foundation as a business owner, regardless of which set of services I am portraying,

When connecting with any healthcare individual it’s important to feel comfortable, and by sharing a bit of my neurospicy self ahead of time I hope that helps with one’s process. One positive of the technology and social media is I can share videos about myself and my services, I just need to work on my anxiety of talking in front of others! (Always easier to help others then to help myself- at least I’m no longer in front of a class of peers).

Growing up I learned about being a business owner from my dad, he would go to continuing education conferences being in a different part of healthcare and meet others locally by referring in nearby towns. Every time we went to the store people knew him and because it’s a small town, knew me or my brothers and asked how things were going. Back then everything was by in person events, newspaper ads, phone calls and insurance referrals of course.

Today’s marketing is similar but different. I am in a different type of healthcare which provides me opportunities to share information and education with you. I also send out snail mail including yearly Christmas cards to referrals, “I am here!” Letters or post cards to ones I may not have connected with, as well as “new location!” Post cards due to moving, again, and boy am I tired of moving. I am feeling a good fit at 516 E Wisconsin Ave in Appleton and 404 N Main in Oshkosh and am in the process of making my space more functional and professional for clients- updated photos will come soon!

When I began, I sent out a paper packet including a letter, brochure, business cards and heat color changing pencils to other businesses. A card saying let’s get coffee! (virtually as it was the pandemic year), and this year I have started having those coffees (in person even!) and making new connections. Part of how I’m receiving this reach is because I update my social media and my online directories, a combination of past and present-day networking and advertising. The more I share, and you view the more people who may need what I offer will have the opportunity to see me.

We all work together even if its indirectly! Any support of clicking, liking, following, sharing or simply reading to the end is helpful and much appreciated. If you would like to have a coffee to talk more about how we can support each other, virtually or in person -please reach out!

How would you improve your community?

One way I would like to help improve my community is offering events. I recently came across “paint parties!” And have rediscovered my old passion for painting and playing with color.

It reminded me that since becoming an independent therapist that I’ve had many requests for private art lessons- it was an added benefit to those that I was also a therapist, however those individuals didn’t want to pay for therapy and as I’m not a teacher those situations did not work out.

So!! Since finding these “paint parties”, over the last two months I connected with an organization and joined a membership which allows me the rights in sharing and selling their designs and have been actively involved in their training to teach me how to teach you! I can provide mobile paint parties, online paint parties, in person at my office parties, and sell art kits to send to you in your home!! These are not therapy groups, these are fun classes to enjoy the relaxation art can provide.

At each event I would have visual and written directions, a pre-traced canvas- wooden craft piece, plant pot or ceramic item pending the hosts choice, paint, brushes, aprons, and other miscellaneous items ready to go.

All registrants would need to do is preregister for the event and show up with a desire to have a fun time with friends or come solo and want to meet others! I would have small selection of simple beverages and snacks available for small donation for those who’d want a little extra.

Hosting groups of paint parties is a fun adventurous way of having a night out and coming home with something super awesome or cute- maybe even a gift for someone if not a gift for oneself.

While I can host general community paint nights, hosts (not me!) can choose to have a theme- ladies night, sleepover, birthday party, fundraiser, mother daughter night out, etc.

…. As painting isn’t for everyone…

I do currently host a “walk and talk fox cities meetup” group that is slowly getting started as the weather clears up. You can now find us on Facebook or meetup.com.

Look forward to meeting you one way or another! It’s nice to meet others with shared interests and have a variety to choose from, this is something I can offer my community.

How has technology changed your job?

“Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.”
– Forest Gump

Technology provided me a way to open and grow my business. During the COVID-19 pandemic I came to the realization that I needed to take better care of me. Being a therapist and having undiagnosed (at the time) ADD, and chronic fatigue among other health issues, I gave my all to my clients, and part of being there for others meant not always having time or energy for myself at times.

Through opening my own office and being in charge of my schedule and intake I was able to build in breaks or work in the comfort of my own home on days I might be too tired or experiencing my own physical discomfort. Having a hybrid schedule has its positives and negatives, but my back sure appreciates being able to sit on my recliner on those work from home periods.

With telehealth and virtual options, I was able to start offering virtual consults to determine if we both felt right for each other prior to starting and provide referrals right away if necessary to avoid later frustration if not a right fit.

I was able to see clients all over the state virtually, and briefly my local clients got to meet my dogs during walk and talk sessions (and continue seeing them other days during virtual- along with meeting their pets!).

Having flexibility with virtual option also meant it took away barriers for clients who had transportation issues or chronic illness flareups who normally wouldn’t be able make it to appointments. With Wisconsin weather, it also became an option during blizzards or downpours that made driving to session unsafe.

Technology may have been available prior to covid; however, it was mainly known for use in larger clinics. I am very appreciative that it has been available, and I found the right connections to mentor me and help me discover it along the way in navigating not only my health journey, but also my growth in offering counseling and coaching services.

What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

I saw this prompt pop up and figure I can’t sleep so why not respond?

My middle name is Jean, after my mom. She named me Samantha after “bewitched Samantha Steven” hoping it would bring me a little magic in my life, and thought it was a beautiful name. my mom and I haven’t always been close or seen eye to eye, but we have our love of arts and crafts and animals, and I’ll always be happy to carry her name with me wherever I go. She inspires me to keep trying with my art and trying new things and for that I am grateful ❤️

Interstate compact- coaching and counseling across state lines

What does this mean? This means a law has been passed to allow counselors and clients to potentially stay together even if having to cross state lines. Wisconsin joined the compact at the end of 2023!

The compact is still in the process of being developed- so we have no official start date- legislation is hoping to have set procedures by end of 2024. Each state will have power over how they want the compact “contract” to look, and which states they will allow to “contract” with them.

For example: being in Wisconsin I have clients who move to Michigan or Illinois, or outer states for college. Any of these states can now say they will or will not allow me to apply to be “credentialed” across state lines. An out of state credential would require me to submit my licensure and other materials to prove I have experience and valid professional license to practice and allow me to work with my clients and potentially clients of that state- this is where each state can determine the capacity in which I can work- either strictly can only follow my client or have free range. Some states have a great need for therapists, and others are over saturated with many providers.

As I find out more information, I will keep you updated. You can also view the website here to find out more information.

Beyond Therapy: Unlocking Your Potential with Coaching Services

Some of you may have noticed, the website has changed and have seen the announcement on social media that Samantha now offers coaching and consulting services alongside therapy! If you are new here, welcome! Samantha is working to be more proactive with posting about her services to better service existing and potential clients as well as general public who comes across her page looking to read something interesting.

Samantha has provided mental health therapy for several years to varying ages from children to adults, ranging from general anxiety to significant trauma. Samantha has decided to offer coaching services as a way to help others who may not have a clinical need but could still benefit from having an individual to work with in meeting their goals. While this means Samantha will designate hours toward coaching clients and lower the amount available for future therapy clients, she has decided that this is the best long-term goal, to avoid personal burnout.

Samantha is also partnering with outside organizations such as Oneida Nation Art Community to provide open studio groups during conferences and helping out with local behavioral health facilities to share what art therapy is and how it can be beneficial alongside other treatments. If you or your organization would be interested in hearing more regarding hosting groups and or formal lunch and learns, feel free to reach out.

So, let’s talk Coaching – What is it?

First, the idea of seeking help for personal growth with a focus on the transformative power of coaching services! Coaching is a proactive and goal-oriented type of assistance. There are clear objectives, a structured framework for progress. This dynamic interaction distinguishes coaching from the more introspective nature of therapy. Coaching has realistic tangible, and measurable objectives, creating a roadmap for personal and professional development. This goal-oriented focus fosters a sense of purpose and direction in the client’s journey. Coaches empower clients to take actionable steps, fostering a sense of self-efficacy and personal responsibility.

While therapy often explores past experiences and emotions to promote healing, coaching is primarily future oriented. It concentrates on setting and achieving specific goals, developing skills, and enhancing performance. While therapy is more about resolving emotional issues, coaching is about unlocking potential and optimizing performance.

The coach-client relationship is collaborative, with the coach acting as a facilitator for the client’s growth. Coaches use powerful questioning, active listening, and feedback to help clients gain clarity, set goals, and take actionable steps toward their objectives. This partnership is built on trust and a shared commitment to the client’s success.

Therapy has Emphasis on Emotional Processing, Past Experiences and Clients are accountable for working on self-awareness, implementing coping strategies, and participating in therapeutic exercises to promote psychological well-being.

Coaching has concrete actionable plans, external accountability partners are encouraged, measurable benchmarks and milestones with clients, milestone check-ins to make sure client is on track with their tangible goals, intentional choices without being in a situation where the past is preventing them from moving forward.

Finding the right coach is a crucial step in the personal development journey!

As when choosing a therapist, it is recommended you request a consult or discovery call to make sure you both align with your needs and goals. Here are different topics to keep in mind when choosing a coach and or coaching program:

  • Have clear goals in mind
  • Research Coach Specializations
  • Consider Coaching Styles
  • Review Credentials and Experience
  • Seek Personal Compatibility
  • Check for Alignment of Values
  • Ask About Coaching Approach and Techniques
  • Discuss Accountability Structures
  • Explore Flexibility and Accessibility
  • Review Cost and Investment
  • Ask for References or Testimonials

Remember! Finding the right coach is a personalized process.

It’s okay to take the time needed to make an informed decision. Whether it is Therapy or Coaching, the goal is to establish a professional relationship that empowers you to achieve your personal and professional needs.

This is enough for now, but feel free to check back in for more on my “what is coaching?” series!

Parenting-wheres the instruction booklet?

Parenting, like adulting or any stage of life, does not come with an instruction booklet.

Being a “fur baby” parent to my dogs and cats, the dozen or so dogs I fostered, has been an experience. From a professional side as a pediatric therapist to the human children I have worked with, has also been an experience. Both experiences make me have gratitude for my quiet time.

We grow up in different environments, with different experiences- socially, emotionally, physically. Like in sessions- I can have ten clients with a General Anxiety diagnoses and they can each present in ten different ways. With these experiences, they shape our world view and how we interact with the world, influence the choices we make and the habits we form.

When an individual has grown up in an environment it will influence their parenting, just like how their parents grew up in certain environment and their parents before them. The world has changed so much over the last few decades, going from closed off to extremely open in a relativly “short” period of time, and as we all know change is hard.

Is “change is hard” a “good enough” excuse? No, not by any means. Food for thought however- when one has not had any instruction book, or someone to guide them in choice making, adapting choices, seeing situations in other perspectives, how are they to know other ways exist? Its important to remember not everyone has the same experiences, and to some extent have empathy.

What we have in our control when coming across individuals or different styles (for example parenting styles) is offer perspective, suggestions, be mindful of feelings and how it might be taken, offer support, be a listening ear, ask how you can help, what might they need to help them pending the situation and circumstances?

In some cases, you may not have any of these options and may just need to walk away, and take care of you knowing you have no options and it is not helpful or healthy to focus on what you cannot control.

I understand This is a hot topic, and my intention is to not cause anger or grief, and by no means am I professional on parenting, I can only offer a perspective, and we may not agree and that’s ok. I hope that we both can find a way to take care of ourselves knowing there is only so much we can control in our lives and how much we can influence others.

Importance of water

Did you know……

By the time you notice headaches your body is already in beginning stages of dehydration? Not drinking enough water can cause headaches, stomach cramps, muscle cramps, dizziness, and so many other things. Your body is made up majority of water and you use a lot of during the day just by sweating, urinating, breathing, and talking. For many adults it’s good to drink 8 -8oz cups or 64 ounces of water throughout the day. If one is active more water is good. Sipping throughout the day or minimum cup of water when waking, eating and sleeping is better than none at all.

The biggest thing many clients complain about are headaches and difficulty sleeping. The biggest factor in common is not drinking water. If you experience headaches and don’t have any known medical condition, try Incorporating a few cups of water throughout your day and see if that makes a difference.

I upgraded my bottle to 64 oz today! Start small and build up, help your body adjust slowly if not drinking much at all.

Habits! Choices! They are everywhere!

How many choices do you make in a day? Hundreds probably if you really think about it. Each of those choices will take you in a direction which will influence how the rest of your day goes. This can influence your emotions, behaviors, thoughts, about all future choices and the people you come in contact with and their emotions behaviors and thoughts – and the list goes on! (Who would have thought a choice could have such an impact??- like glitter… the love spreads and never ends).

So, choices, habits- what are some choices that you do every day in certain routines that then influence the rest of the day? How does your morning look, or the beginning of your workday, or evening, nighttime? Mine has been a hot mess honestly. Trouble sleeping, trouble waking, rushed a lot, disorganized house, poor diet, the list goes on.

Lately however, I’m changing my habits. I started the nutrition program, (I attempted the gym and other movement strategies, but no time or energy led to stopping) and low and behold the nutrition changes have made all the difference. I have a schedule and as long as I follow the food schedule I notice more energy, no bloating, can be more productive, and I can do things outside of work including changing my habits to make my days easier.

I’m sleeping better at night, I’m getting paperwork done easier, posting more on social media personally and professionally, reconnecting with people and making new friends (OMG people!!). And I even started a private FB group for my “peace in color” followers! It’s private so we can have discussions and share more than my regular page, or this website allows. I also have shared my new “Walk and Talk Fox cities Meetup Group on Meetup https://meetu.ps/c/51FZT/l3LGs/a to encourage walking, socializing, and making friends!

Food for thought- What habits or choices do you make that could use a change to influence your life in some other way?
